Comments: This volume contains 27 maps and 4 plates and introduction and geographical descriptions written by Rev. Thomas Smith. There are two title pages: one at the beginning of the work; and a second before the individual country maps (after xxiv, before Europe). The first title page is very long and detailed beginning UNIVERSAL ATLAS AND INTRODUCTION TO MODERN GEOGRAPHY: the contents are then detailled including THIRTY-ONE MAPS AND PLATES, accurately delineated by an eminent geographer. Engraved by JOHN COOKE. The Introduction and Geographical Decriptions, by The Rev. Thomas Smith. The imprint reads: Printed for J. Harris, successor to E Newbery, Corner of St Paul´s Church-yard, and J Cooke, Howland Street. By H Bryer, Bridewell-Hospital, Bridge Street. 1802.
The second title page contained in a circle panel the same size as the maps reads: The Universal Atlas. By John Cooke, Engraver of Topographical Maps, Military Works &c. (All upper case.) The imprint below this reads: Pub.  April 29, 1802 by John Harris, Bookseller, corner of St Pauls Church Yard & John Cooke, Howland Street.
There is a dedication page To Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York, Princess Royal of Prussia. Pub. Nov. 1, 1800 for John Cooke. Dedication is clearly signed Faithful humble servant, John Cooke. There is a map of Prussia present. All maps are circular.

 

Variations in imprint: Europe map - Goddard (above) replaced by Cooke (below).


Later issue 1804: The maps in the atlas together with one plate (the Solar System) appeared again in A New Universal Atlas; Intended as a Companion to the Geography for Children and other Introductory Works was printed for J Harris (Successor to E Newbery) at the Juvenile Library, Corner of St Paul’s Churchyard. Although the same circular maps were used (later imprints) the format was changed: each double page opened out with a map printed across, i.e. you needed to turn the page to see it properly (each plate has a centre fold).[2]

  London Confusion Towards the end of the 18 th century and the dawn of the 19 th there were literally thousands engaged in the printing and allied trades in London. Many printers were also publishers, many engravers worked for multiple employers and the book printing, binding and retail trades were rapidly expanding. The area between Holborn in the north and the Strand in the south was littered with businesses engaged in publishing in one form or another. It is not surprising then that many people shared the same family name, but the number of Cookes, and specifically J Cook(e) made it difficult to identify a single person. The BBTI [1] has almost 65 entries for Cook or Cooke, with 9 entries for J (or I) Cook/e in London and one each in Plymouth and Exeter for this period.   John Cooke of Union Street, Stonehouse (1823-1845)   When, in 1823, another plan of the breakwater was published ( 30 ), Cookes Plymouth Breakwater with the transverse section of the completed section , Cooke´s address is 48 Union Street for the first time. There is no mention of the Copper-Plate Engraving and Printing Office or of Mrs Nile.     Fig. 35.
